Ce n’est qu’à l’âge de 24 ans, après des études au conservatoire de Montréal en interprétation à la clarinette et au saxophone, que Simon Bertrand décide réellement de se consacrer à la composition, suite à un stage déterminant avec le maître français Henri Dutilleux. Depuis l’obtention d’un premier prix de composition en France sous la direction de Claude Ballif et d’un doctorat à l’Université de Montréal sous la direction de José Evangelista et Denis Gougeon, Simon Bertrand s’est affirmé comme un des compositeurs québécois les plus prolifiques et actifs de sa génération, autant au canada qu’à l’étranger, par des orchestres, ensembles ou solistes tels que l’OSM (Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal), l’OSQ (Orchestre Symphonique de Québec), le Toronto et le Edmonton Symphony, L’orchestre Philharmonique de Shanghai, L’Orchestre National d’île de France, l’Ensemble de la SMCQ, le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Quasar, Le New Danish Saxophone Quartet, Utrecht String Quartet (Hollande), Friction Quartet (USA), Pro Musica Nipponia (Japon), Gustav Mahler Orchestra (Hong-Kong), les flûtistes Guy Pelletier et Claire Marchand, les clarinettistes Jean Guy Boisvert, Simon Aldrich et Lori Freedman, la pianiste Louise Bessette, la soprano Marianne Lambert, la Mezzo Marie-Annick Béliveau les altistes Brian Bacon et Marina Thibault, le thérémiste Thorwald Jorgensen (Hollande). Il a remporté de multiples prix, notamment le prix OPUS «compositeur de l’année» en 2013, Il a également composé plusieurs musiques de film, notamment pour Zentropa (compagnie de production de Lars Von Trier) et plus récemment signé la musique de «Pays” de Chloé Robichaud.

His works have been performed in numerous countries by orchestras, ensembles and soloists such as the the Montréal and Quebec Symphony, Toronto and Edmonton Symphony, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, Gustav Mahler Orchestra (Hong-Kong), Orchestre National d’île de France, l’Ensemble de la SMCQ, le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Quasar, the New Danish Saxophone Quartet, Utrecht String Quartet (Holland), Friction Quartet (USA), Pro Musica Nipponia (Japan), flautists Guy Pelletier et Claire Marchand, clarinetists Jean Guy Boisvert, Simon Aldrich et Lori Freedman, pianist Louise Bessette, soprano Marianne Lambert, mezzo Marie-Annick Béliveau, violist Brian Bacon et Marina Thibault, and theremin player Thorwald Jorgensen (Holland). He has been awarded several prices, most notably the Opus “Composer of the year” prize in 2013. He has also composed several film scores, one of them produced by Zentropa, company founded by Danish director Lars Von Trier, and more recently the score of Chloé Robichaud’s film «Boundaries”.
