Gavin Fraser (1993) is a composer and bass-baritone singer hailing from Antigonish, Nova Scotia. His music “often balances on a tightrope between static beauty and violence” and has been described as “fresh with pithy modesty” (NY Classical Review ’17). Often inspired by dreams, the ocean, climate justice, and storytelling, Fraser composes for diverse forces, including chamber music, vocal works, large ensemble pieces and electroacoustic music.

Most recently, Fraser collaborated with Barbara Hannigan and the EQ ensemble on the new short chamber opera Penelope (’21), and was commissioned by Jonathan Crow for a new chamber work which premiered at the Toronto Summer Music (’21).

Fraser has received numerous awards, from the SOCAN Foundation, the Land’s End Composer Competition, the Nova Scotia Talent Trust, the University of Toronto’s COVID-19 Global Student Engagement Award, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Currently the composer in residence at the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance, Fraser has also served as their program director, assistant artistic director, and one of their resident composition teachers. He is completing his D.M.A. in composition at the University of Toronto.

Né en 1993, Gavin Fraser est un compositeur et baryton-basse originaire d’Antigonish, en Nouvelle-Écosse. Sa musique « repose en équilibre entre beauté statique et violence » et a été décrite comme « fraîche avec une pithiatique modestie » (New York Classical Review, 2017). Souvent inspiré par l’onirisme, l’océan, la justice climatique et les récits, il compose pour diverses formations, notamment de la musique de chambre, des œuvres vocales, des pièces pour grand ensemble et de la musique électroacoustique.

Plus récemment, Gavin Fraser a collaboré avec Barbara Hannigan et l’ensemble EQ à un nouvel opéra de chambre, Penelope (2021), et a reçu une commande de Jonathan Crow pour une nouvelle œuvre de chambre qui a été créée au festival Toronto Summer Music (2021).

Gavin Fraser a reçu de nombreux prix, notamment du Conseil des arts du Canada, de la Fondation SOCAN, du concours de composition Land’s End et du Nova Scotia Talent Trust, ainsi que le COVID-19 Global Student Engagement Award décerné par l’Université de Toronto.

Actuellement compositeur en résidence à la Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance, Gavin Fraser en a également été directeur de programme, directeur artistique adjoint et l’un des professeurs de composition en résidence. Il termine actuellement son doctorat en composition à l’Université de Toronto.
