With strong melodic instincts, Benjamin Sajo’s (b. 1988) contributions strive to fuse song-like tunefulness with the raw intensities, techniques, and tricks of contemporary music, prioritizing the invention of memorable themes articulated with a rich post-modern wit. Forging a fiercely independent voice following his academic studies (M.Mus, McGill University, 2013; B.Mus., University of Western Ontario, 2010), with his principal mentors themselves representing a broad spectrum of aesthetic approaches—Wayne Irschick, Brian Cherney, Chris Paul Harman, John Rea, Jan Jarczyk, Paul Frehner, David Myska, and Peter Paul Koprowski—his music coalesces his diverse spiritual heritages, experiences living in remote Northern Canadian communities, and his passions for poetry, philosophy, theatre, and all good stories. A prolific and enthusiastic collaborator, Benjamin’s music has been performed by several artists establishing a name for themselves in the new music community. His debut classical album, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry for Trombone & Strings, was performed and released on all major platforms in 2020. A cross-Canada sojourner, he now lives and works in the beautiful hamlet of Gjoa Haven (ᐅᖅᓱᖅᑑᖅ), Nunavut.
