World premiere of Septentrion for flute and electronics by Eliot BrittonPerformed by Susan Hoeppner, flute and Eliot Britton, electronic engineeringProgram Notes for Septentrion:Septentrion is an obsolete Latin word, once used in English and French, to describe northern regions or the north. The relentlessly transformative nature, speed and agility of the north is brought to life by Susan Hoeppner’s interpretation. I am in awe of her skill and grateful that she encouraged me to create something challenging. A rare and precious opportunity not to be wasted. Septentrion deep samples and magnifies the flute’s metal hardware and whistling air columns, building it into a roaring, pulsating specter of Canada’s north wind. Audio material is compressed, chopped and sculpted into an unlikely dance music library, fusing electroacoustic and EDM practices. When a flute’s hollow key clicks are pitched up they sound brittle and percussive. When you pitch them up to the threshold of human hearing they mimic the delicate yet menacing sound of ice pellets blowing across a frozen highway. Can you guess where I grew up? Manitoba. Which is referred to “down south” by some. In this case, my friend Nelson Tagoona whose distinctive throat boxing (throat singing + beat boxing) style further bridges the gap between dance music, air columns and the breath of the north wind. My hope is that this music captures the frantic and relentless natural transformations that I have come to miss.
