I wrote this piece for SSAA choir after discovering Amy Levy's delicate poem about the secret glances two women shared during a Victorian-era diner. I was very touched by the two women’s secret feelings, that even the implied society pressure and unacceptance could not hinder.
To translate in music Amy Levy’s poem’s subtilty and delicacy, I wrote this lied using only the white keys of the piano, then, in stark contrast, I used the B flat note to portray their secret, the weight and the burden of it.
I chose the 6/8 rhythm in order to obtain a gentle swaying, a dance-like feeling, a soft dizziness reflecting the women’s feelings.
The piece’s structure is based on a slow build-up, the seemingly unlinked images, sensations and thoughts accumulating and focusing until the last part, where the melody is heard seamlessly.
