Stereoscope Saxophone Duo (Olivia Shortt and Jacob Armstrong).
Note: this was the first performance of the whole suite--- Some movements were performed by Stereoscope on November 8, 2014 at Project Gallery, Toronto.
These six short pieces, for several different pairings of baritone, alto and soprano saxophones, were written for the duo Stereoscope (Olivia Shortt and Jacob Armstrong) in 2014-15. Varying in style and character, they range in length from less than half a minute to just over two. They may be performed in any order, separately or together.
"Boingo" is a fan letter to Danny Elfman, former frontman of the influential post-punk band Oingo Boingo and subsequently a successful film composer. "Eccentric Bop" is jazz-inspired but whimsically off-kilter. "Corona" hints at a visual image: the solar corona or the eerie glow of an electrical corona discharge. Each of these is the visible trace of an immense but mostly unseen energy. "Invention" is a musical riddle of sorts. "Imaginary Shepherd's Song" is very loosely inspired by Balkan folk music and bagpipes, while "Drum Circles" plays out processes reminiscent of Steve Reich, on a shorter time scale than is typical of early minimalism.
