Kitchener Musical Society Band, Dave Davidson, Conductor
The “Latkes Suite” was written in the summer-fall of 2017. It is dedicated to Dave Davidson and the Kitchener Musical Society Band for their wonderful help in encouraging the writing of the piece.
The three movements Hora, Nigun, and Freilakh, are named for their respective klezmer elements.
Traditionally “Hora” is a medium paced circle dance in 3/4, where the underlying rhythms emphasized are the first (and to some degree third) beats of a measure.
A “Nigun” is a hummable/singable/lyrical sort of piece, in contrast to dance or reflective sorts of pieces.
A “Freilakh” is a fast circle dance in 4/4. I have informally heard from folk musicians that possibly definitive to the Freilakh is a contrast of a walking bass with 8/8 sorts of syncopation.
