Welcome to the little Dance Vignettes! I love dance in all its forms and have selected ten assorted dance styles for this book. Energetic and engaging they are designed to get you moving. Program notes offer a bit of anecdotal history of each dance. For this collection each piece is composed using a Synthetic scale. These scales were outlined in a text ‘Twentieth Century Harmony” by Vincent Persichetti. Synthetic scales are not as common and are outside of major/minor tonality. As he states: “some original or synthetic scales are used more often than others. These better known scale often coincide with folk scales”. A list of the scales used can be seen at the back of the book. Many synthetic scales are so similar, sometimes differing by just one note. But even that one note difference suggests a new musical tonality. Some of the dances incorporate two synthetic scales. The dances are little vignettes ie: suggestions only. The music is presented without development and presents a short portrayal of the dance.
