Commissioned by Mexican Canadian pianist Jorge Suarez, “The Sunken Garden” was inspired by The Sunken Gardens and Theatre built in an abandoned limestone quarry in San Antonio, Texas. The Japanese Tea Garden is beautifully serene, set amidst limestone and water. Rising paths and steps wind from the bottom floor to the top edge. The stratified nature of the garden is reflected in the first piece. The timeless flow of water and the impact on the land by the San Antonio River is represented in the second. The outdoor theatre in its natural and casual setting plays host to all kinds of music and audiences. The warm nostalgia and Hispanic flavour of my Texas roots are embodied in the final piece.
