January 1970, Universitas Dutch Reformed Church, Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa Jacobus Kloppers, organ
PrefaceThis Pastorale on Psalm 23, dedicated to my young son, Martin, was written in early 1970 inBloemfontein, South Africa. It is based on the lovely melody written by Professor F.W. Jannaschof Stellenbosch in 1919 and attached to the Afrikaans text version of Psalm 23 by the Afrikaanspoet Totius as it appeared in the Afrikaans Psalter of 1936.My original setting was in G major and printed in the Liturgiese Orrelmusiek Vol. 4, 1980 by theInstitute for Church Music, Department of Music, University of the Free State, Bloemfontein,South Africa. This version, though more effective in the high range, created some performancechallenges for the player since the pedal did not reach beyond G above middle-C and the Flute2’ had to be coupled down from one of the manuals. The hands had to touch some of thesehigher keys on this specific manual while playing the contrapuntal material (Flute 8’) on anotherone. When the American Lutheran Publishing House Concordia showed interest in publishing itin the early 1980s I consequently transposed it to E-flat major, the key in which it waspublished.Unfortunately, this latter publication went out of print and Concordia later ceased to publishorgan compositions. The work is now re-issued in digital PDF format. Copies will be available through the CanadianMusic Centre in Toronto, Canada and on loan from the Music Library, Odeion School of Music,University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa. My sincere thanks to Dr. Diederick Basson, Stellenbosch, South Africa, for preparing the digitaltranscription of the manuscript.Jacobus KloppersEdmonton, Alberta, Canada2018
