The title Rebonds (“Rebounds”) is linked to the percussion instrument that is at the heart of the piece. While I was composing, I had the chance to regularly work with soloist and marimba virtuoso Anne-Julie Caron, which gave me a good understanding of the characteristics of the instrument and its jubilant possibilities.
The play of the mallets striking the wooden bars requires great technical expertise and huge amounts of flexibility. Following the demands of the score, the musician has to use up to six mallets at a time (i.e. three per hand). Most importantly, they must control the bounce back all while using that kinetic energy to shape the musical phrases and inflexions, which sometimes involves literal choreography around the instrument.
The score thoroughly explores the dynamism of this energy. The rhythmic play of the call and response with the orchestra guides the short first movement. In contrast, the second movement makes space for the ornate discourse of the marimba that traces a sinuous line breaking away with discrete polyphony, in a slow tempo. The third movement has two parts: it evolves from a pulsing rhythm constructed around a recurring motif, towards a smooth harmonic texture, homophonic at times, entrusted to the string section. This texture underlies a tight exchange between the woodwinds and the marimba, constituting the height of the piece. While the marimba takes the centre stage in the first two movements, it closely merges with the orchestra in the third.
I must mention that, at the time, I rediscovered with great joy the work of Béla Bartók, especially the particularly acoustic and percussive atmosphere of his famous Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion. So, while I was immersed in Bartok’s universe of organized and ordered dissonance, I composed Rebonds.
Rebonds was commissioned by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Orchestre Métropolitain with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. The composition’s dedicatee, Anne-Julie Caron, premiered the work with Nézet-Séguin conducting, on April 18, 2008, at the Théâtre Maisonneuve (Place des Arts) in Montreal.
