The work is in four movements - Adagio, Scherzo, Adagio, Passacaglia. The Adagios are related thematically. The Scherzo is in an ABA form with the Cello and Bassoon soloists exchanging the melody. The Passacaglia theme is distinguished by the rising major 7th followed by three descending semitones. It has a rousing finish.
