The 1st is divided into two parts opening with a 45-bar Adagio Prologue.
The 2nd part continues for a few bars with the theme of the Prologue and moves through several tempo changes.
The 2nd movement is marked “Lively, playful” and it too does occasionally refer to the subdued Prologue theme.
The 3rd movement is a gentle “Larghetto” and reflects on the somber mood of the Prologue with the soloist displaying both lively and gentle themes.
The full orchestra opens the “Allegro non-troppo” 4th movement with the piano entering 25 bars later. There are several short tempo changes and both the orchestra and soloist bring back themes from the previous movements.
