Three Scottish Songs is a collection of three iconic Scottish melodies that have a place in the canon of Scottish Song. The first, My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose, is a 1794 poem in Scots by Robert Burns that has gained worldwide popularity set to the traditional tune Low Down in the Broom. The second song, Skye Boat Song, is a late 19th century adaption of a Gaelic song entitled Cuckoo of the Tree (Cuachag nan Craobh) written by William Ross in 1782. Sir Harold Boulton composed the new lyrics in 1880 that describe the journey of Prince Charles Stewart to the Isle of Skye as he evaded capture after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Ye Banks and Braes is a Scots song written by Robert Burns in 1791. Burns set the lyrics to an air called The Caledonian Hunt’s Delight written by James Millar. The lyrics were inspired by the story of Margaret (Peggy) Kennedy and her legal claims against Andrew McDouall the father of her child. Burns wrote three versions of this song indicating his keen interest in this case.
These three songs are presented here not as a set but are intended as stand alone arrangements to be used as the performers see fit in a concert or rehearsal setting. I do hope you enjoy performing them.
