Each of the four Chorales is a setting—for different vertical distributions of the same chord-tones—of the same 64-bar melodic line, and based on the same harmonic system. This harmonic system, in turn, is based on an artificial “tonic” octad, with its inversions, derived from certain intervals in the acoustical harmonic series.
