Stephen Chatman Mirage, 1987 Commissioned by: Windsor Symphony Orchestra, with the assistance of the Canada Council “Mirage gives the feeling, the experience of the wide desert, of a desert mirage’s hazy, constantly shifting painting of impressionistic textures and colours. I am very interested in developing the sound combinations of orchestral colours, the colours of the woodwinds and brass, organizing their pitches in carefully planned and controlled ‘chance-happenings’. But my main consideration in Mirage was that of pure sound, built out of series of major chords superimposed one on the other, creating clusters of bigger chords. Section by section these shift the sound, slowly moving the tonality from A to E flat.”
