Yves Bonnefoy's poem, in the artless simplicity of its natural imagery, suggests our mortality with such gentleness that wonder, rather than fear, becomes the prevailing emotion. I have tried to reflect this gentleness and wonder in my setting. It was particularly important to me that the melodic line should rise at the end, at the words 'la nuit tombe.'
