Embodiments is an exploration of various potential directions for sonic ‘communication’ between a performer and computer software. The process of writing the composition consisted of:
- Exploring the extended techniques of the present day bass clarinet which included live performers, listening to contemporary music performances, and reading through the theoretical literature about bass clarinet - Identifying the musical material and writing the score which included research in other interactive environments, obtaining related printed literature and audiovisual materials and studying the most recent developments in both interactive music and computer software and hardware
- Exploring various algorithms used as parameters for both sound processing and the interactive real-time performance software
- Developing the multi-channel performance software that integrates the bass clarinet input, live electronics processing, and pre-recorded instrumental sounds. I have created the MaxMSP - based EMBODIMENTS Performance Environment - that includes various algorithms for filtering, sound synthesis, virtual multi-channel spatialization from IRCAM (Paris), GRM, Cycling, and my own programs.
