Kingston, Ontario Sydenham Street United Church 19 Feb 2017 Orchestra Kingston John Palmer, conductor
This was originally written for Flute Choir as ' A Celtic Tapestry'. I have made numerous changes to the original to adapt it for orchestra. The term Hop-Jig appears to be used interchangeably to refer to a tune in 9/8 time or a tune just like a Slip Jig with a special variation that has emphasis on quarter note or eighth note pairs. I have chosen to write this in 6/8 with the occasional bar in 9/8. It has the feeling of a jig with an occasional hemiola to provide some rhythmic interest and then help re-emphasize the Jig feel once you return to triple meter. The Ballad is initially a 4 bar canon into which I have inserted a plaintiff melody. The ending returns to the canonic elements. Each entry of the canon must be easily heard, so each new 4 bar entry should be strong and then move into the background once a new voice enters. Once the melody begins, the background needs to remain light so that the lead line never sounds forced. In the Reel the emphasis shifts from the 2nd beat of each bar in some sections to the downbeat in others. Maintain a light staccato throughout this movement. You don't need to go any faster than 104. It should be at a comfortable single tonguing tempo.
