Emphasizing subtle rhythmic variation, timbral colour, and registral shifts, this piece is loosely akin to forms of prayer based upon phrases chanted over and over to invoke the sacred, or to calm the soul. Especially in times of anxiety or trouble, repetitive chant seems to create a kind of "stillness in action", eventually opening spaces in one's heart and mind into which the voice of the Divine may be heard. Hence the title "Invocation". The beginning and ending structure of this piece is loosely based on the Fibonacci series applied to the elements of accent, pitch and motive length.
