Descants is a series of pieces for instruments in natural environments. ‘Natural’, in my meaning, includes human-made environments, eschewing any artificial distinction between humans and the rest of the environment. The composed music is intended to become a part of the natural soundscape, not foregrounded or separated from the natural sounds around it. Descants 3 consists of twelve sonic rituals in an outdoor environment. As with Descants 1, it is structured around the pre-modern Japanese way of counting hours, with each movement played at the start of each hour and a complete performance taking 24 hours. Unlike the other pieces in the Descants series, which take place in natural locations which have (to a greater or lesser extent) good onmyōdō (mediaeval Japanese feng shui), in Descants 3, four objects which may or may not independently make sound are placed around the audience (or mics) to create an artificial onmyōdō ritual space.
