This piece, Ro – which can be literally translated as 'dewdrop' – was written for and dedicated to Cheryl Duvall. It is inspired by my reading of Konparu Zenchiku's theoretical writings on nō theatre, his vision of art (especially, for him, poetry, music, dance, and theatre) as a spiritual experience which can reshape our understanding of – and ways of being in – the world. Zenchiku's writings and plays are rooted in the syncretic religious world he inhabited, encompassing Shintō (a kind of native animism), Mahāyāna Buddhism, and Confucianism. Ro was premièred by Cheryl Duvall on 17 September 2022 at the Canadian Music Centre in Toronto.
