May 1981, Queen's University, Kingston
Gordon Craig clarinet
This piece is dedicated to my clarinetist friend, Gwillym Williams. Gwillym played with the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra, York Winds, Esprit Orchestra, Toronto Chamber Winds, and other groups during his long career.
Gordon Craig, Principal Clarinet with the Kingston Symphony and Clarinet professor at Queen's University at Kingston, championed the work through many performances. Gordon also taught the piece to his students.
Gordon was attuned to the atmospheric potential of the work. He sometimes incorporated lighting effects and movement into his recitals to turn it into a multi-media performance. I fully endorse such artistic and creative responses to the music.
"For Gwillym" requires great breath control, technical agility, and tonal security throughout the entire range of the clarinet. The work demands that the performer exercise musical sensitivity as well. The performer becomes a partner in the compositional process.
