nMaya (Kokopeli II) carries on a theme of inspiration derived from natural phenomena and native spirit from Consort: Dances of the Borealis (1998, piano/percussion quartet), Edifices (naturels) (2000, piano solo), and Anasazi (Kokopeli I) (2000, amplified piccolo and electronics). This duo for piano and percussion derives a number of formal elements from Mayan cosmology. The music is organized in four main parts, framed by five short Invocations. Each section expresses a different mood, and concerns itself with different melodic/harmonic and rhythmic processes. Each also shifts to different combinations of percussion instruments, including a few unusual ones, such as the steel drum. nMaya was commissioned by Kovalis Duo with kind assistance from the Canada Council.
