This piece, scored for Flute, Violin, Violoncello and Piano, is a continuously unfolding series of vignettes that last from a bar or two to over 8 bars. Intention drives all action and in this context propels us from one vignette to the next. The mood shifts constantly and there are many tempo changes throughout, and while highly chromatic there are periodic 'tonal' areas that appear and then dissolve back into chromatic activity.
As there are frequent tempo changes throughout the suggestion is made that one of the players should be resposible for establishing the tempi. Because of the profusion of tempi it is suggested that rather than aiming for exactly the number specified by the tempo indication that the performers think in terms of percentage so that for example, if the tempo goes from 92 bpm to 100 bpm they think roughly a 10% increase in the current tempo.
Rubato is encouraged.
