This is one of my earliest compositions that was premiered by flutist Diana Aitken and myself at the piano, written for a CBC Two New Hours recital in December, 1992. The four movements titled Prelude, Scherzo, Nocturno, and Impromptu are characterized by their fluctuating temperament, contrasting colors, the use of extreme registers, and abrupt dynamic changes. The energetic first and last movements are through-composed, with a short cadenza for the flute. The second movement is of a rhapsodic character, and the third movement is a little “night music”. The language of the music is free and expressive, with a melodic structure built on intervals of sixth, seventh, and second. One important aspect of this work is to explore the “fun” and excitement of duet playing.
