vivid
was inspired by the emotional impact of music on memory when experienced at transitional periods of change, especially the time of adolescence. It is and continues to be my strong belief that the music that you hear when you enter adolescence stays with you in a very essential way for the rest of your life. Having the unique advantage of working in consultation with a group of bright grade sevens for this project, I wanted to explore their most salient musical memories, in the end of weaving them into the piece. We talked at length about their own meaningful musical memories based on their favourite pieces, which were often tied to important people or events. We then worked on trying to transcribe and adapt melodies from these works, several of which are interlaced in the work. The most prominent melody is from Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love”, which was sung as a lullaby to one of the students as a small child by his grandmother.
vivid
is also about how we interact with our own memories over time – how sometimes we first remember a feeling, and details gradually fill in in nebulous ways.
