This is the first of Thee Books of musical settings composed with verses selected from the work of the American poet Theodore Roethke (1908-1963), one of our country's most respected artists. Both the comic and serious sides of his temperament and his breakthroughs in the use of language are exemplified in the six short lyrics of Book 1. The songs are tonal, with Nos 1,3 and 6 being strongly centered, Nos 2 and 4 more vague, and No.5 a 'naive' melody. The music is straight-forward and relatively simple - even folk-like - in keeping with the personal nature of the poetry. Roethke-lieder: Book I was commissioned by the American soprano Allyn Muth Van Dusen, and first performed by her in November of the 1983 in Rochester, New York, with Norman Boehm, pianist. The song cycle is approximately 12 minutes in duration and was completed in December of 1982 in Fairport, NY.
