Premiere
18/07/2010 UPEI Department of Music Charlottetown Dale Sorensen (tenor trombone), Eric Mathis (tenor trombone), Bob Nicholson (bass trombone) and Gregory Irvine (tuba)
The University of Prince Edward Island has produced several accomplished low brass performers. This project brought together UPEI Professor of Brass, Gregory Irvine (tuba), with three former students: Eric Mathis (Associate Principal Trombone, Honolulu Symphony), Bob Nicholson (bass trombone/tuba, Foothills Brass / Charlottetown Festival Orchestra), and Dale Sorensen (trombone, Charlottetown Festival Orchestra; brass instructor, UPEI). These four musicians, while no longer all year-round residents of PEI, get together at least every summer to share their love for low brass by presenting recitals for various combinations of low brass from solo to quartet, often with piano accompaniment. Quartet for Low Brass is in three movements: 1) Rounds 2) Smooth Polyphony 3) Cascades Rounds plays on imitation of the voices hocketted closely between the instruments. Smooth Polyphony begins with a nod to Renaissance polyphony and smooth voice leading. As the movement unfolds a more improvisatory feel is introduced, before a final chorale ending is heard. Following this the third movement is a Cascade of descending arpeggiated figures. Quartet for Low Brass was premiered on July 18, 2010 at the University of Prince Edward Island. Commissioned by: Dale Sorensen
