Premiere
Green Bay, Wisconsin - USA Union Congregational Church 22 Sep 1985 H. Thomas Hurley, organist Dedication recital for the (then) new 40-rank Casavant organ.
V'la le bon vent, a traditional song of the voyageurs originated in France as a story song. In Canada, it evolved into a song for paddling or rowing, and over the centuries it took on many versions. I felt it was an appropriate theme for use in this organ piece, since the history of Green Bay is so tied with the history of Quebec, the province of origin of the new Casavant instrument. My setting, in variation form, casts the tune in a variety of colours, most of which I chose as personal favourites when I heard the instrument.
