"Proche et Lointaine...La Femme was inspired by the desert landscape of New Mexico. In particular I was drawn to various metaphysical questions that tend to arise as one perceives the cycles of growth and decay in nature: long shadows at sunset which scattered into the horizon; huge clouds oblivious of the terrifying infinity they seemingly caressed; the leaves of cottonwood trees that rustled through the night. This landscape became synonymous for me with a search for a kind of
temenos
, but in the sense of a sacred territory perhaps existing only in the unconscious, marked by rhythms one can barely distinguish. The piece was cmposed at a time of particular reflection on cycles of loss and renewal - a time of journeying through that inner desert which is at once seemingly near yet somehow removed from us, and where perhaps one goal of which, in the words of Northrop Frye, is to begin a process of 'annhilating everything we thought we knew, and restoring everything we never lost.'" -- from score.
