The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943 was one of the most tragic episodes of heroism in the Twentieth Century. It was a desperate act of Jewish resistance against the German forces liquidating the Warsaw Ghetto and murdering its population. To commemorate this event musically, I drew texts from both ancient and modern literary sources. The ancient texts come from the Jewish Bible: several verses from the Book of Psalms (the same ones Pope John Paul II quoted in his historic speech at Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in 2000), and a fragment from the Lamentations of Jeremiah, containing the words "Arise, cry out in the night." Both texts are sung in English. The modern texts come from Wladyslaw Szlengel's poem "Counterattack," and from Janusz Korczak's "Harvest of Deeds." Szlengel was a Polish-Jewish poet who perished in the Ghetto Uprising. His "Counterattack" was a rallying cry amongst the resistance fighters, and is sung here in its original Polish by a chamber choir.Korczak was a beloved children's author and pedagogue. In 1942, German soldiers came to collect the Jewish children in Korczak's orphanage to transport them to the extermination camp in Treblinka. Korczak was offered sanctuary, yet he turned it down. Unwilling to abandon his children at this critical moment, he chose to die with them at Treblinka. The words by Janusz Korczak are sung by a children's choir.
