A Northern Winter's Night begins with quiet, long notes fading away, and short motifs, giving it an open and melancholy feel. The colour changes as the motifs are passed among the various instruments, with the feeling enhanced by the strings played 'sul tasto'. It evokes the fading light of a mid-winter afternoon. As the piece progresses the piano comes in with thirty-second note patterns giving the piece a hidden energy, undermining the calm dark strings. (The northern lights perhaps). The piece moves through various textures, becoming more calm and using less dissonant harmonies. It ends with a final rhythmic section in the piano, punctuated by the strings, then returns to the long notes and motifs of the opening. The sounds blend together as it ends with a peaceful B major chord.
