Premiere
February 21, 1999 Dutch Reformed Church (Moederkerk) Humansdorp, South Africa Celebrative communion service for its 150th jubilee Conductor: Christiaan Carstens
This is a setting for Flute, 2 Trumpets, SATB, Congregation and Organ, based on all four verses of Hymn # 15 in the Afrikaans Dutch Reformed Hymnal of 1978(an Afrikaans translation of the German hymn "O dass ich tausend Zungen haette": Text by Johann Mentzer, 1704; Music by Johann Balthasar Koenig, 1738). Following a festive instrumental introduction based on the opening motif of the hymn tune, Verse 1 is a setting for SATB, Congregation and Organ. Verse 2 is a pastoral setting of the text for Flute, SA and organ. Verse 3, set for 2 Trumpets, TB and Organ in the related minor key, reflects the dynamic lightning of the storm and peaceful aftermath suggested by the text. A short instrumental interlude leads to the final festive verse in which all voices and instruments combine. Commissioned by: Dutch Reformed Church, Humansdorp, South Africa
