Originally composed in 1975, the suite is dedicated to the memory of my father, Frederic Messenger Ethridge (1900-1974), a musically gifted man who played the piano by ear and sang tenor in choirs. He instilled in me a joy of music early on. (excerpt) A descending motive (Eb D B Bb) provides untiy throughout the "Elegy" and "Toccata". Low bell-like tones ring out the tonal centres of the "Elegy". based on the inversion of the motive, followed by the motive. (Bb B D Eb D B Bb). The "Canon" answers at the inversion. The G minor "Pavane" features a one-bar ascending ostinato figure, (G A A Bb). The "Toccata" builds tension in its wide leaps and bravura passages. (excerpt)
