The Quintet for Piano and Strings was composed in 1987 and first performed in October 1989 at the Festival international de musique actuelle de Victoriaville, Quebec, co-produced by Radio-Canada. The work is of vast proportions: each of its four movements lasts between 10 and 15 minutes. Its ties to such illustrious forebears as the quintets by Frank and Vierne are evident in the moving lyricism of its themes, which are organically linked and reappear at various moments within the work, and the solidity of its construction, which is nevertheless kept in the background to allow the work's expressiveness to be fully appreciated. Each musical idea undergoes multiple transformation that produce a series of ramifications stemming from an original source, in keeping with the ideal of diversity in unity. The work's thematic unity is thus assured, since the motifs of each new episode in this musical and poetical voyage are derived from the three initial themes of the first movement that constitute the thematic material for the first three movements. A new theme is introduced in the last movement and superimposed on the other three themes in the coda. Additional program notes and performer biographies in English and French (fourteen (14) pages) are inserted.
