Portraits
is a set of five pieces which are portraits of different women. The music presents a proud woman who laments the loss of physical beauty but recognizes the humour in the situation ('An Old Woman's Lamentations'), a mother's tender look at the changes in her teenage daughter ('To My Daughter'), a prostitute who is very frustrated with the inability of men to make up their minds ('Girl on the corner of Elizabeth and Dundas'), a disoriented woman---much like the bag ladies of today---who shows a strong spark of life under the general fogginess ('The Hag of Beare') and a toast to all types of women to celebrate the differences of personalities ('Here's to the Maiden').
