ABOUT THE MUSIC: The training of music educators. excellent in most respects, has often neglected the music of the last fifty years, causing general unavailability of truly "new music" for school use. TOWER may help to fill this gap. The instrumental parts of the work employ restricted ranges and very limited technical demands. Players are therefore free to give maximum attention to the dynamics and to their place within the ensemble timbers. Exposing students to readily available recordings of contemporary artists is strongly encouraged. The purposes of the work are primarily two: 1) to encourage the student in a constructive attitude towards, and an affirmative aesthetic regarding, the contemporary musical thought of mid-twentieth century; 2) to allow the young performer to experience the convectional proportional metric system in a very simple guise. Both purposes are aimed at linking the basic training of the instrumental class with the customs of the serious contemporary composer. Instruction in good tone production, intonation and articulation is just as mandatory here as elswhere. The work is an adjunct to the preliminary exercises of the composer's A CONTEMPORARY PRIMER FOR BAND and the more elementary wind ensemble composition STONE IMAGES, published by Merion Music, Inc. Stonehenge, Tenochtitlan, Knossos and Angkor - vast ceremonial ruins- huge, never-changing, yet constantly different. The static, frozen musical sounds attempt to evoke these mammoth shapes. TOWER is the sixth in a series of "megalithic" compositions that bring together basic instrumental training with the customs of the serious contemporary composers.
