Premiere
18/04/2009 Schoenbergzaal The Hague, The Netherlands New European Ensemble Conductor: Christian Karlsen
Ovid's Metamorphoses best describes the fate of Marsyas. ‘“Why do you tear me from myself?" he cried. “Ah, I repent! A flute is not worth such price!"' Does this stripping of his exterior give image to the artist's meager pulsing viscera or his secret inner wealth? Or, alternatively does it allow us a glimpse into a hidden nihilism and destructiveness? Does Dante really believe that he can withstand more than Marsyas and that Apollo's breath will propel his art to new heights? These questions have given impetus to the ideas that form this work. The best answer that I have been able to work out is that perhaps the substance of Metamorphoses lies in what Ovid chooses to omit rather than that on which he chooses to focus.
