The superb chamber ensemble, Amici, and I had been discussing the possibility of a new work for several years. This initial dialogue, plus the added encouragement of CBC Radio producer Neil Crory, who suggested the multi-movement form of the work, inspired me to begin this new piece.
Neon's six movements (tutti, duo, duo, tutti, solo, tutti) explore various aspects of light and cover a full range of emotion from the nervous energy of the first movement, the quick, fleeting feel of the second, to the passionate bravura cello utterances of the third, the suspended feel of the fourth, the breathlessness of the fifth, to the delicate opening of the sixth with its tender, longing close.
The six highly integrated movements are connected by the main motif of interlocking major and minor seconds. The cello solo’s melody of interlocking seconds in Movement III (Visions), presented for the first time in a highly expressionistic and passionate exposition, eventually ends with a distillation of the theme into an almost complete one octave descending chromatic scale in artificial harmonics. Movement IV, quiet, with a feeling of suspended time, begins with the slightly elaborated chromatic scale in the cello, which eventually extends over a two octave range in the piano. The fifth movement (Sparkling Capriccio), for solo clarinet, is a light, quick and rather playful extrapolation and development of motifs from the opening movement. Movement VI touches upon themes found in earlier movements but eventually becomes a seemingly inexorable descending duo between the clarinet and cello, whose final note of this section is its lowest pitch, an open C, bending dramatically a half step lower. The close of the composition is a rising series of repeated piano chords. This piano part has a propulsive feel through its almost hypnotically repeating chords. Added to this is the continuous upward motion of half steps constantly resolving into new harmonies. It is my intention in this last section, marked teneramente, to impart a sense of longing and inevitability in this final permutation of the motive.
Never far from my thoughts as I wrote this piece was the fact that it was a work for this combination of instruments, the great clarinet trio Op. 114 by Brahms that precipitated the wrist injury which finally ended my days as a pianist and forced me to more seriously consider composition as a means of expression.
