The origins and the motivation for the writing of these three volumes of Preludes for Guitar came from the guitar instructor at the University of Lethbridge, Dale Ketcheson. I had previously written a number of works for him and as we picked up our mail in the departmental office one morning he said to me, half in jest, "Dean, I have a commission request for you.. I need some music written for the guitar in flat keys. My students can't play in flat keys and avoid them where possible." No more was said but the idea peculated in my mind and I began to write. The result was three volumes of short two to five minute preludes for guitar with eight preludes in each volume using flat major and minor keys from three to seven flats. Dale was apparently pleased with the result and, as well as teaching some of them, began to program a number of his favorites on his own recitals - even including one or two on a university's music department recorded disk. The difficulty level varies from medium to preludes demanding a professional performer. The preludes which call for the low E string to be tuned down to E flat are especially fun and create an interesting change in depth of tone and color! Dale was, as usual, instrumental in guiding my compositonal efforts and invaluable in lending his editorial skills to the project.
