Premiere
22/2/1985 Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge Alberta; Musaeus Ensemble; Catherine Duff, soprano; Stewart Grant, oboe; J.P. Christopher Jackson, clarinet; Joanne Grant, violoncello.
The song cycle Autumn Memories was commissioned by and written for the Musaeus chamber ensemble of the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra in December 1985 and premiered at a chamber concert at a du Maurier Gallery Concert Series on February 22, 1985 at the Lethbridge Art Gallery. This song cycle is a setting for soprano, oboe, clarinet and violoncello of six short, haiku-like poems written by the composer and dealing with thoughts and scenes concerning the fall season of the year. The work attempts to present the soprano voice as an integral part of the ensemble rather than as a solo voice with a supporting instrumental accompaniment. The poems alternate between moods of somber, almost nostalgic reflections and light-hearted descriptive Autumn scenes. The musical style is mildly dissonant with some use of oriental flavored scalar materials.
