Premiere
Vancouver, Canada Lutheran Campus Centre, UBC 31 May 1997 Derek Darling
Genesis is an atonal piece that seeks to describe the feeling of the creation of the world as it emerges out of nothing into something.A colour filled piece with lots of room for the imagination. Be creative. Alone: atonal, late Romantic feel, descriptive of the beginning of the world, or the beginning of various things. Peace: originally performed in 1996 at Dunbar Lutheran Church was later performed and recorded by Derek Darling – viola and David Hamilton – piano in June of 1998 at St. Mark’s Place, Kitsilano. Peace for Viola uses some late Romantic Harmonies and is a bit of a challenge for the pianist especially. Having said this; it’s worth the work. The mostly legato music has a tragic, slightly desperate underlying quality about it. An interesting piece both melodically and harmonically. Excellent for recitals.
