timeless is a piece that takes its name and much of its musical material from the drum and bass work by Goldie (to be specific, the influential composition Inner City Life from the album entitled Timeless). Drum and bass, originating in London during the early 1990's, mixes basslines associated with reggae music with sped-up breakbeats from techno music. The breakbeat strips a basic rhythmic pattern down to kick drum and snare, and is performed at a quick tempo of 160 -180 BPM (beats per minute), alternating attacks between the two drums. timeless removes the bass line, leaving the percussionist as soloist. Although the primary material is derived from the Goldie classic, it is layered and developed in order demonstrate the virtuosic possibilities of the traditional drumkit. This piece is written for and dedicated to D'Arcy Gray, and was commissioned through a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. Commissioned by: D'Arcy Gray
