Composer's notes: I hope this key signature will not scare young pianists away. One can just as easily play Grandma's Lullaby in G Major - that is, white keys only, with the exception of F# - and I invite anyone who would prefer it to go ahead and make the change. I chose 6 flats because the person for whom I composed the piece was going to be learning it by ear, and the black keys felt so very comfortable under the hand. I ask more advanced music readers to forgive the incessant finger numbering and hand-position instruction marked on the score. They were intended as visual memory aids for the benefit of someone who does not actually read notation. Hopefully, they will be of use and not get in the way. The numerals I, II, and III on the first page of the score, under the bass clef, indicate the 3 patterns to be played by the left hand. To speed up the learning process, the student is advised to learn these patterns well, even memorize them, before attempting to put the two hands together. Finally, think of the Lullaby as an expression of tender love, sung gently by a Grandmother as she rocks her grandchild to sleep.
