Originally commissioned in 1996 by the Association of Canadian Women Composers, 'Remembered Voices' received its premiere in Toronto. The first section, SONG, was added in 2002. The work is based on the popular, 'She's like the swallow', described as "one of the most beautiful of Newfoundland folksongs. There are thousands of lyrics on the theme of unhappy love, but seldom has the longing and regret been expressed so simply and so poignantly." ('Folksongs of Canada' compiled by Edith Fowke and Richard Johnston) It is said that this folksong has been used by composers more often than any other. 'Remembered Voices' is based on 'She's like the Swallow', one of the most beautiful of Newfoundland folksongs. The violin begins 'Song' with the interval of the rising 5th (used throughout the work) to set the mood and the piano follows with the folksong itself. 'Elegy' continues to express the solemn, tragic tone; but the irrepressible Newfoundlander's spirit finally triumphs over the gloom in 'Dance', and the violin, breaking the mood, 'kicks up its heels'.
