The magnificent cave art at Dunhuang, in Western China sets the stage for the ballet, “Dream of Dunhuang”. In the middle of the vast wastes of Western China, lies the oasis of Dunhuang, situated in today‘s Gansu Province. Since the Western Han Dynasty (202BC-8AC), Dunhuang was an important trading and cultural center on the famous “Silk Road’, the ribbon of communication which fostered the historic ties between East and West. In the East was China, source of treasured trading articles such as silk; in the West, the ”road“ branched to Venice, and north to what is today‘s Russia. Canadian composer Huang An-lun‘s major composition, the full size ballet in 1 ½ hr, “Dream of Dunhuang”, based on the story of the cave, has been selected as one of the “Master Piece of Chinese Music in 20th Century” in 1993. Most of the images in the ballet are based on the frescoes and sculptures of the Dunhuang caves. To be arranged as the piano solo pieces, Huang An-lun selected 3 dances from the ballet. They are #1. the Feather Fairies (4’05’’), #2. the Celestial Musicians 1(7’15’’) and #3. the Persian (7’27’’). All of them have been also chosen as the official pieces of the 5th International Piano Competition of Asia, and the National Cadenza Piano Competition of China, 2009. 1.Feather Fairies Unsuccesfully, the Feather Fairies try to keep away the incoming stranger from their hidden world. 2 Celestial Musicians Dancing with various Chinese instruments, the celestial musicians float down from the fresco.... 3 Persian Dance
