Michael Conway Baker Concerto for Piano and Chamber Orchestra, 1974 Commissioned by: Robert Silverman, with the assistance of the CBC “What he produces... is honest, workmanlike, well-crafted music you can listen to. (He has) a flair for creating an attractive, unhackneyed line, and the musical ability to develop it in sound and interesting ways.” Max Wyman, Vancouver Sun “My intent with this concerto was to write something very expressive and virtuosic. The first movement has a relentless motion which never lets up. “The second movement is in the form of a Passacaglia - a wonderful structural device from the Baroque period. The main theme, however, is built on an 11 note tone row. “The last movement has a light-hearted aspect which permeates the music. At the request of the soloist, Bob Silverman, I added a cadenza which I now feel is too long and makes the Concerto rather ‘lop-sided’. In subsequent performances I often shorten this section.”
