Ronald Bruce Smith Constellation, 2000/2003 Commissioned by: Kent Nagano, Berkley Symphony Orchestra Original version premiered by: Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Kent Nagano, conductor “The title Constellation refers, in a way, to the form of the piece. Separate musical components or objects are juxtaposed where each can be understood as a single star in a constellation. With each reappearance an object is colored slightly differently (or quite differently) than its previous occurrence. This is somewhat analogous to looking at a constellation at different times of the night and year, when position and intensity can vary. Another aspect of the form is the strong rhythmic cuts that occur from time to time, which is analogous to film editing technique or montage.”
