From November 26 to December 6, 2012, seventeen thousand people gathered in Doha, Qatar for the 18th United Nations Climate Change Conference. As the world’s countries debated what could be done to reduce carbon emissions, a devastating typhoon hit the southern Philippines killing 600 and leaving thousands homeless. In his official statement to the Conference on behalf of his country, Filipino Climate Change Envoy, Naderev Sano, presented an inspirational and heartfelt address that captured first-hand the devastating effects of man-made climate change to the world’s peoples, especially those most impoverished. Some of the audio contained within this composition was taken from his address along with shouts of defiance from activists during their protests at the conference . A year later, Mr. Sano gave another speech at the next UN Climate Change Conference, this time in Warsaw, Poland. Feeling words were not enough, Sano also went on a hunger strike because of the lack of action by the richest countries in the world. The tragic irony is that Sano’s homeland was once again hit by a typhoon weeks before the conference, this time killing over 6000 and leaving 1.9 million homeless. This composition is dedicated to those brave individuals like Naderev Sano who speak out for changes in government policies that would curb carbon emissions and lessen the frequency of such terrible tragedies.
